How can Physiotherapy help my child?

A Paediatric Physiotherapist helps children develop and improve their movement, strength, coordination, and physical abilities. Key areas of support include:

✔ Gross Motor Skills & Movement Development

    • Helping children achieve important movement milestones like sitting, crawling, standing, and walking.
    • Improving coordination, balance, and motor planning for activities like jumping, running, and climbing.

✔ Muscle Strength, Tone & Posture

    • Addressing muscle weakness, low or high muscle tone, and joint stiffness.
    • Providing exercises to improve posture, core stability, and endurance.

✔ Neurological & Developmental Conditions

    • Supporting children with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, and other neurological disorders.
    • Using specialized therapy techniques to enhance movement, flexibility, and coordination.

✔ Injury Rehabilitation & Pain Management

    • Helping children recover from sports injuries, fractures, or surgeries.
    • Managing conditions like scoliosis, hypermobility, and growing pains with targeted therapy.

✔ Gait & Mobility Assistance

    • Assessing and improving walking patterns, balance, and coordination.
    • Recommending mobility aids such as orthotics, walkers, or supportive footwear if needed.

At Motion Health Kids Therapy, we aim to ensure sessions use fun, play-based activities, exercises, and hands-on techniques to help children move better and build confidence in their physical abilities.

Initial Appointment

At Motion Kids Therapy, the initial appointment with a physiotherapist is made up of 2 parts:

Part 1 Face-to-Face Session (60 minutes): First 60 minute face to face session at the clinic, where the therapist will build on the background information provided and commence assessment with your child.

Part 2 Non-Face-to-Face Support (30 minutes): A 30-minute non-face-to-face support session may include communicating with your child’s teacher or other professionals involved in their care, scoring, analysing, and interpreting standardised assessments, and developing therapy goals and a therapy plan to be reviewed with you in the next session. If needed, it may also involve a phone call with the parent or caregiver to clarify any additional information before the next session.

Ongoing Therapy Appointments

Your Physiotherapist will set goals with your family and child, and support your child to achieve these goals by:

  • Recommending ongoing physiotherapy intervention sessions. These are usually recommended as either weekly or fortnightly sessions of 45 minutes duration with 15 minutes allocated for preparation and documentation.
  • Helping your child to build their gross motor skills through targeted and fun activities.
  • We provide parents and caregivers with resources to actively support their child’s occupational therapy journey. When a multidisciplinary team is involved, our occupational therapists collaborate regularly with other professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes for your child.
  • Our goal is to assist you, your child, and your family in enhancing daily movement and activities, helping your child reach their full physical potential and thrive in everyday life.
